Thursday
“Hi Nick! How are you?”
“Juliette! So your nose isn’t permanently stuck in your laptop then?”
She laughed.
“Every time I’ve walked past the office recently you’ve been hammering away at the keyboard with a Don’t Disturb Me face on.”
“I know. Every day something happens. Every day. It’s been…”
“Frantic?”
“Yeah, frantic.”
At which point, the Maintenance Manager arrived with another ‘something’. I left them to it.
Mum was asleep when I got to her. Judging by how tidy the bed was she hadn’t moved a muscle in the two hours since her post lunch pad change.
“Hello mum. HELLO MUM! it’s Nick. Warm enough? Comfortable?”
She nodded weakly. I spent 5 minutes giving an account of my day. Then I began to get that feeling.
“Mum? Nod your head if you know I’m here.”
Nothing.
Author’s Note
My Mum is in a nursing home in a small village in the Thames Valley. The photo is not of the home. I used an AI image generator to give the reader some idea of the home she’s in.
All, some or maybe even none (you’ll never know!) of the names have been changed to protect privacy and hide real identities. If you think you recognise someone then let me know and I’ll edit the post or remove it entirely
